Designing and operating the world’s largest floating offshore Wind Farm

Kincardine stands as the largest floating offshore wind farm installed on a semi-submersible foundation. The project is located 15 km off the coast of Aberdeen, in waters ranging from 60 to 80 m deep, and it features five WindFloat T units hosting 9.5 MW turbines.

Kincardine was an extremely demanding project due to the schedule pressure imposed by the deadlines associated with the Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) program . Principle Power was invited to the project late in the development phase and assisted the client with an agile redeployment of the 2 MW Kincardine 1 unit to meet the tight grid connection deadline and an accelerated design schedule for the 5 turbine units.

In addition to testing the technology in new site conditions and with larger wind turbines, the project provided us with the opportunity to implement refinements of the design and processes based on lessons learned from WindFloat Atlantic to reduce installation timing.

Principle Power currently provides operation and maintenance (O&M) services to Kincardine, leveraging operational data to improve project performance and learnings to optimize the WindFloat® portfolio of technologies.

A crucial step towards commercial-scale deployment

Each of the five V164 9.5 MW turbines incorporates three 80 m blades, fabricated at the Vestas factory on the Isle of Wight. The blades were painted and finished at the Fawley facility, a former oil-fired power that that has been repurposed.

The fabrication of the five WindFloat® units started in April 2019 at Navantia’s facilities in Spain and leveraged a supply chain that brought together components from the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. The close interaction between Principle Power and Vestas, built on the WindFloat Atlantic project, was instrumental for the project’s fast delivery, with platform-turbine integration happening at Rotterdam port in November 2020.

Despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, when yards shutdown and operated at a reduced capacity for several months, the project achieved an installed capacity of 50 MW by the fall of 2021.

During the course of these operations, the project has completed first-of-a-kind operations for wind turbine major component exchanges, including both tow-to-port, and in-situ options. These successful experiences validate the flexibility of the WindFloat® technologies and provide invaluable lessons that we are using to inform future technology and method improvements.

We are also using the real-world operational data to feed our O&M simulation tools, which we apply to help clients develop O&M strategies for large commercial projects globally, providing insight on how to maximize uptime and minimize costs.

Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm was constructed at what was a symbolic time for the decarbonization of the energy sector in the UK. It's the largest floating offshore wind farm in the world with the most powerful turbines installed on a floating offshore wind platform. Projects like Kincardine inform the next generation of industrial-scale, cost-competitive floating wind projects in the UK and globally.
