Emeryville, California, August 6, 2018 – Principle Power is pleased to announce that construction of the three WindFloat foundations for WindPlus’ 25 MW WindFloat Atlantic project has begun at facilities in Portugal and Spain. WindFloat Atlantic will be located approximately 20 km offshore Viana do Castelo in Northern Portugal and will feature the Vestas V-164 turbine, rated at 8.4 MW. The project is expected to be fully operational 2H 2019.
“The WindFloat technology forms the heart of the WindFloat Atlantic project and we are extremely pleased that the project has advanced to this stage,” said João Metelo, Principle Power’s CEO. “This is a milestone project for the floating wind industry as it continues to show our important progress on the path to full commercialization.”
Principle Power’s WindFloat foundation allows offshore wind projects to be sited in locations with the most abundant wind resource, independent of water depth while introducing new methodologies for installation and O&M that reduce risk, cost, and environmental impact.
“We believe that this project, which combines state-of-the-art offshore wind turbine technology with state-of-the-art foundation design demonstrates how the WindFloat can be attractive to project developers in Europe and around the world,” said Mr. Metelo.
In addition to WindFloat Atlantic, Principle Power is executing on other projects ranging from 25-50 MW elsewhere in Europe and in Asia. These near-term projects prove the bankability of the floating wind industry, while Principle Power develops its global multi-GW commercial pipeline.
